Study in Andorra at the Andorran school

If you are thinking of residing in the Principality and you have children, you will probably ask about what it means to study in Andorra and how its education system is. As we have already mentioned on numerous occasions in other articles on our blog, Andorra is characterized by 3 different systems that can be chosen free of charge: Andorran education system, French education system and Spanish education system. On this occasion we want to talk to you in more detail about the Andorran system.

The educational centers of the Andorran system receive the generic name of "Andorran School". It is currently present in all parishes of the principality offering maternal education, first and second education in 11 schools. What does each of these stages consist of?

Maternal Education: For students from 3 to 6 years. This is a stage before the beginning of compulsory schooling, but practically all the families begin the schooling of their children in Maternal, as it also happens in other countries like Spain. It is divided into Maternal A and B, separating children by age.

First education: This is when compulsory schooling begins and admits pupils from the age of 6 to 11. This stage is now divided into three cycles (first, second and third) in which children are grouped by course. Thus the first cycle includes first and second courses, the second cycle, third and fourth and the third cycle, fourth and fifth.

Secondary education: It completes compulsory schooling, encompassing students between the ages of 12 and 16 and is divided into two cycles of two years each.

As it can be a little messy, here I leave a link in which this structure is summarized graphically.

From here students can choose different paths, the baccalaureate or vocational education. In both cases they can end up accessing university studies and staying in Andorra or going abroad. Barcelona and Tolousse are usually the most popular destinations.

The most surprising thing about the Andorran system, or at least that is what struck me the most when I first visited one of its centers, is that in the same class there are children from two courses, ie in the first classrooms First cycle, there are children of first and second year (6 and 7 years). Classes unfold sometimes unfolded and sometimes all together and despite what it may seem is something that really works very well. Another issue aside is the new Strategic Plan for the Renovation and Improvement of the Andorran System PERMSEA which is being carried out since the 2010-2011 academic year and deserves a separate post.
